Check out Gran Turismo 4 for playstation2 if you can, one of the tracks is called Tokyo route246!! Really fun blasting through the streets in a Nissan R34 Skyline!

posted by Dr. CSUS on July 5, 2005

Tokyo R246 you ask about?? Here's your longwinded answer. There's a kick-ass driving simulator, (not just a game mind you) for the Playstation that Ulala, Bisendow, and myself are big fans of. Well anyways, there's alot of real courses on there like Motegi, Laguna Seca, etc. In addition to these real circuts, there is some fictional ones that the development team came up with for the game. There's one for NYC where you race up Broadway, turn east and drive past the southern edge of Central park, head south and come through Times Square again. Well long story short, there's a track based on R246 in Tokyo. The attached picture below might help you determine where exactly the course is. I put it this way, because it took several years to model all of the surroundings and they are true to form when compared to the actual physical world. The developers were shooting for an accuracy somewhere in the area of 1-2 centimeters across a 4-5 km length course. Astonishing accuracy and the graphics are just unbelievable.

posted by Dr. CSUS on July 5, 2005

While we're a bit on the topic Doc, I've got a small question for you. While you're in Tokyo, will you ever be near the International Forum designed by Rafael Vinoly? I'd do just about anything for a wallpaper quality photo of the exterior @ night !

posted by Dr. CSUS on July 6, 2005

So it's the same R246, as it is designated here as. A Japanese musician friend of mine once wrote a version of Route 66 with lyrics retooled for Route 246. She's since moved to Australia. Anyway, R246 starts at the Imperial Palace (psychological center of Tokyo) and goes all the way out to very close to Mt. Fuji. It goes through my area (Shibuya). On the PS2 game, only the leg #4 is R246, with the other parts added to make a loop, which encircles the detached palace where the princes and other members of the imperial family live. For Japanese gamers, the 246 course as shown is truly a Dream Drive because there's no way the Imperial Family would allow a race circuit around their digs. Generally, what they say goes. I'm certain the Japanese gamers really get a charge out of it -- imagine a course around the White House where cars run into things and explode in huge balls of fire. I'm not a video game user, since becoming physically addicted to Pole Position one summer back in the 1980s. I'll try to view it, though.

posted by Dr. CSUS on July 6, 2005

Amazing, Dr.!! This whole time I thought R246 was made up for the simulator. But then again, Gran Turismo 4 is the most realistic video game ever created. Has there been much of a change in security over there since the recent events in the UK?

Well, my whole argument there is about the 'miracle' of childbirth. This is such a huge misnomer that it warrants pointing out. It's not really miraculous; it happens thousands of times a day in every nation of the world. A woman who has given birth has endured something difficult, but it's certainly no miracle. (provided there were no complications, that is.) I think most people refer to it as 'the miracle of childbirth' solely because of the emotional bonds formed with children. As a result, they feel special, since a 'miracle' entered thier lives, and that they should be accorded respect that they haven't earned. This generally wears off after a while, usually after a few months. But some sanctimonious mothers (rosie o'donnel springs to mind) feel that just because they did something that roughly 30% of the population can do, that they're entitled to special treatment and consideration. Now, raising a kid? that takes guts, bravery and a whole hell of a lot of effort. that gets my respect. Just squeezing them out? get in f*cking line.

Was it amusing? Derogatory? Silly? Personally I thought Homer's sparkling head flying through the kitchen to tap out the theme song on a child's xylophone was riotous. And then there's the poor dairy cows.</p

posted by Dr. CSUS on September 24, 2006

The Content? Not really ""Japanese"" humor, but typical inane Simpsons irreverence. The Simpsons, like South Park, seems to rely on the comedic device of Dadaism -- bizarre and disjointed weirdness, rather than being incisively pointed about what is being lampooned. How's that?

posted by Dr. CSUS on September 26, 2006

That, was fantastic. Thanks for your opinion! I'm going to be laughing about that for a while - Dadaism, and your critique of its application on The Simpsons, that is.

What running group is it that you reffered your firend to?

posted by Dr. CSUS on January 22, 2008

Elif, the running group is in Tokyo. But it's a fun group. Actually, if you super-triathaloned your way to Tokyo, you will likely have achieved your goals by the time you get here. Good luck on your transformation -- I started my New Years Resolution back in the middle of November, and have already lost nearly 7 kgs (15 pounds) already. Exercise is good, but it also has to be accompanied by seriously smaller meal portions.

posted by Dr. CSUS on January 22, 2008

I really noticed while I was in the UK how much more we eat in the US. The plates here are like more 2 times bigger. I was in UK only two weeks and lost 15 pounds, due to me walking everywhere and not eating so much. When you comming back this side of the Pacific? I think my next traveling Adventure just might be Japan...so be careful!

posted by Dr. CSUS on January 23, 2008

Elif, Thanks for your note. NO KIDDING about the food portions in the US, not to mention the reliance on the automobile. I mean, last month someone announced a ""Green SUV"" -- they STILL don't get it! I will be in Sacramento one day only in February (visit ailing mother in Carmichael), but will return to the US from April 15 to about May 20, staying in SF as usual. During that period, I hope to go up to Sacto to attend a Dive Bar event. Tokyo? Sure, you can stay with us in my daughter's room. She's in Boston now, going to college. Room for 2 or 3 in there. Can't beat the rates (one bottle of Calif. wine per night).

posted by Dr. CSUS on January 24, 2008

Hmm not bad, just name the type you want and it shall be brought. I might be tempted to crash one of your famous tastings in SF as I did before. That was something awesome, I still have the bottle that you gave me. It survived an apartment fire and I still dream of the taste of that Sake...it was like heaven...hmmmmmmm.....

posted by Dr. CSUS on January 25, 2008

We will likely have another tasting when we come during April 15- May 20. But the sake there is NOTHING like going on a Deep Geek Sake Crawl in Tokyo. Nothing else comes close. Send me a photo of that bottle, or post it, and I will bring you one fresh from Tokyo next month.

posted by Dr. CSUS on January 25, 2008

Awesome, will do. But I will trade you. One bottle of Turkish Raki gotten from England for one bottle of Saki. :)

C-record but without Delta brakes. Original Pirelli tubulars, matching grey suede saddle and handlebar wrap. Why am I selling? Getting a restored 1980 Colnago in black chrome with a Nuovo Record group. I plan to swap the rear derailleur for an old Campy Rally (new and still in box) and a SINGLE front chainwheel. The ultimate touring bike, and chrome means there is no paint to chip; a plus when bagging the bike and going by train.

Thanks Art for the sentiment. As I've often said after 1977, Sacramento is a good place to be from. I was born in Sacramento and lived there for the first 22 years of my life. Then I took a powder and went abroad. Life has been better since, but I cannot forget where I'm from. It was not bad, living in Sacramento from August 2004 to June 2005, but honestly I would not go back until I would be confined to a wheelchair.

Chef David is American (he lives in my neighborhood) and puts on a kick-ass BBQ buffet with a number of gourmet touches. Plus lots of microbrew.

And, about 20 minutes away by light rail is a Mexican restaurant run by real Mexicans (including the former chef at the Embasada de Mexico). Oaxacan Mole de Pollo and fresh corn tortillas? posted by Bisendow on December 21, 2008

Josh, The subtitles on this pretty much reflect the soundtrack voices. However, 1. Japanese homes do not have kitchens with dishwashers. 2. The Japanese voices are done by non-Japanese people, so they have American accents. However, the script seems to have been checked by a Japanese person, though it was written by a non-Japanese (albieit one familiar with Japan). 3. The Japanese lettering in the artwork was done by a non-Japanese; crude with subtle mistakes. A curious item, indeed.

posted by Dr. CSUS on December 21, 2008

Thank you for that insightful dialogue regarding the technical makeup of the clip. It's interesting to me that you can so clearly define and detail such particulars; impressive as well to one who struggles with foreign languages.

But what did you think of the actual content? Was it amusing? Derogatory? Silly? Personally I thought Homer's sparkling head flying through the kitchen to tap out the theme song on a child's xylophone was riotous. And then there's the poor dairy cows.</p

posted by joshryker on December 21, 2008

The Content? Not really ""Japanese"" humor, but typical inane Simpsons irreverence. The Simpsons, like South Park, seems to rely on the comedic device of Dadaism -- bizarre and disjointed weirdness, rather than being incisively pointed about what is being lampooned. How's that?

posted by Dr. CSUS on December 21, 2008

posted by Elif on December 21, 2008

Elif, the running group is in Tokyo. But it's a fun group. Actually, if you super-triathaloned your way to Tokyo, you will likely have achieved your goals by the time you get here. Good luck on your transformation -- I started my New Years Resolution back in the middle of November, and have already lost nearly 7 kgs (15 pounds) already. Exercise is good, but it also has to be accompanied by seriously smaller meal portions.

posted by Dr. CSUS on December 21, 2008

I really noticed while I was in the UK how much more we eat in the US. The plates here are like more 2 times bigger. I was in UK only two weeks and lost 15 pounds, due to me walking everywhere and not eating so much. When you comming back this side of the Pacific? I think my next traveling Adventure just might be Japan...so be careful!

posted by Elif on December 21, 2008

CSUS on December 21, 2008

Hmm not bad, just name the type you want and it shall be brought. I might be tempted to crash one of your famous tastings in SF as I did before. That was something awesome, I still have the bottle that you gave me. It survived an apartment fire and I still dream of the taste of that Sake...it was like heaven...hmmmmmmm.....

posted by Elif on December 21, 2008

We will likely have another tasting when we come during April 15- May 20. But the sake there is NOTHING like going on a Deep Geek Sake Crawl in Tokyo. Nothing else comes close. Send me a photo of that bottle, or post it, and I will bring you one fresh from Tokyo next month.

posted by Dr. CSUS on December 21, 2008
